USS Wyandotte

The USS Wyandotte was a former chartered commercial steamer called the Western Port that was later purchased by the Navy and commissioned as the Wyandotte.

In December 1860, Wyandotte entered the drydock at the Pensacola Navy yard to have her bottom scraped. She was refloated 9 January 1861. Three days later, the Pensacola Navy Yard was forced to surrender to Confederate forces massed outside the gates. Her CO, LT Otway H. Berryman, refused to surrender his vessel.

The Wyandotte was assigned to the newly stood up Gulf Blockading Squadron and remained patrolling off Fort Pickens and Santa Rosa Island until her departure in August 1861 for repairs in New York and reassignment to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron.
